Deflection Dance Theatre is a brand-new semi-professional company under the creative production of Helen Weekley. Deflection is bringing performances and creative programmes to the North East that are linking in Theatre in Education, awareness of social issues and creative solutions through artistry.
Starting in January 2019 our advanced artisans of performing arts (ages 12 yrs+ and adults including artists with disabilities) start work towards projects. The first being working towards performing a piece titled ‘Fallen Angel’ however with COVID-19 now hit we will be pausing Fallen Angel to then create a piece of dance theatre on coronavirus and how it has made an impact on our societies, mental health and how we find our new ‘normal’.
Both performances will last approximately 45-60 minutes and is both staged and filmed to reach audiences far and wide aiming at general public, schools, colleges, universities and other organisations as a creative tool for them to use to highlight mental health leaving a legacy to signpost anyone in need of support.
Deflection Dance Theatre link into the education programme delivering performance and workshops based on our performance.
Being a member of Deflection Dance Theatre is by invitation only or audition. The adults within the group are performers who are already established within their professions and the youth within the company will be chosen by their dedication to their craft through Detonation Warriors and those who show a particular ability within the art form that would enhance their skills within the semi-professional level and wouldn’t normally have access to this level of opportunity. Deflection is about bridging the gap between amateur and professional with apprentices working in collaboration with professionals to enhance their training.
Deflection will give people a therapeutic theatrical experience through dance theatre that will provoke them to think about society exploring themes e.g. mental health, their own mental health, the mental health of others, how this links into general health and well-being and what they can do to help themselves and others to bring positivity, support and happiness; enabling social change. It will challenge the stigma attached to mental health and promote the ethos that ‘Its ok, not to be ok’.
We are available for commissions as well are producing our own work. All workshops are led by members of Deflection Dance Theatre and our work continues as ambassadors of the arts to keep our culture alive and the creative processes we offer available for as many people as possible with equality.
At present Deflection Dance Theatre is a full company, however please register your interest if you wish to be considered to join the company and keep checking here for any auditions we hold. If you are a freelancer please send your CV to info@imaginairumcreativestudios.com
